Oh, those wonderful medieval costumes…

The project of the Cultural-Tourist route The Routes of the Frankopans is layered and comprehensive in its implementation. One part of our project includes cooperation with associations that deal with the preservation of Frankopan heritage, and operate in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. In this context, the project provided a service of making new medieval costumes for four associations – Frankopanska straža Grobnik, Klub prijatelja Grada Trsata, Ordo Sancti Viti and the association Zrinski-Frankopani Drivenik.

Frankopanska straža Grobnik (Frankopan Guard Grobnik) is an association for the revived history of Grobnišćina, located in the South Tower of the westernmost Frankopan Grobnik Castle. With its activities and performances, the Frankopan Guard Grobnik revives parts of the rich and turbulent Croatian history in the area of Grobnišćina and Primorje. The association uses uniforms that are thematically related to two chapters of the rule of the Frankopans in the area of Grobnišćina, and are related to the 10th and 16th centuries. The emblem of the Frankopan Guard Grobnik is a historic Frankopan golden crown with a red coat of arms in the middle, in which a mace and a saber are crossed, guarded on each side by two golden lions who claw a medieval plait of golden color.

Klub prijatelja Grada Trsata (Club of Friends of the City of Trsat) is an association that, among other things, deals with the consideration of cultural and historical heritage and works to preserve the tradition of ancient Trsat, its cultural and historical monuments and old customs, as well as nurturing the valorization of its diverse heritage. The activities through which the Association achieves this are: organization of lectures, exhibitions, scientific, humanitarian, entertainment, cultural and other gatherings and events and participation in them, publishing the Club’s newsletter, magazine “Tarsatika”, encouraging the preservation of traditional, cultural and natural heritage, advocacy for the revitalization and protection of cultural, historical and monumental values and cooperation with organizations engaged in similar activities.

Ordo Sancti Viti (Order of St. Vitus) is an association that chose its name in honor of the patron saint of the city of Rijeka from which they originate – Saint Vitus. The association deals with medieval revived history by promoting traditional chivalric values and skills, studying and reviving historical crafts, preserving old customs and beliefs and participating in tournaments throughout Croatia and Europe. The association revives the period from the middle of the 15th century from the area of the city of Rijeka, Kastav and its surroundings during the reign of Matija Korvin. Thematically, the association consists of a knightly order, free citizenship and craftsmen. The coat of arms of the association is an eagle on a shield divided into four fields, and was designed according to the rules of medieval heraldry. The motto of the association is “Igni Ferroque”, ie “Fire and Sword”, which serves as a warning to all enemies.

Association Zrinski-Frankopani Drivenik is also actively working on preserving and nurturing the Frankopan heritage, and for many years they have been successful hosts of the event “Drivenik – guardian through history”, an event that brought together similar associations in Drivenik Castle which contributed to the attractiveness of the project.

Costumes for these associations were made by the Zlatni konac Association from Vukovar.

In addition to the abovementioned associations for which new costumes were procured through our project, in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, originating from the island of Krk, there is also the Association Knezovi Krčki Frankopani (Counts of Krk Frankopans) . The association works with the aim of revitalizing the historical and traditional heritage as well as with the desire to create a new cultural and tourist product that will enrich the cultural and tourist offer of the city and the island of Krk. The association is also involved in reviving customs and social events from the time of the Counts of Krk, making costumes, weapons and props, reviving old crafts and presenting indigenous local products through various gastro-ethnological events. The main manifestations of the Counts of Krk Frankopans are: Krk Fair – Lovrečeva and Gradec on the moon.
