Relation of the Frankopan and Zrinski families towards nature

Interpretation centre Brod na Kupi

"At the end of the 14th century the Frankopans were awarded a royal charter for the exploration, excavation and processing of gold, silver, copper, lead and other metals, and from then on they began extracting iron ore from the Gorski Kotar region. The Zrinskis continued their work, and they specifically developed the use of forests, which they cleared for the maintenance of facilities for the processing of ores, the trading of wood and the creation of pastureland."

And in doing so, by using the natural resources of Gorski Kotar, one by one, they also made the many mistakes which to this day are characteristics of modern man. Mother nature quickly let them know where their boundaries were with torrents and floods. For those, however, who respected her, nature treated them well and revealed her medicinal side. The Frankopan and Zrinski families were well acquainted with medicinal plants, especially the female members. Home medicine cabinets were well equipped with accessories for healing and numerous remedies, particularly those made from medicinal plants. The advice of herbalists was highly valued. Books with medicinal remedies, herbariums and books about plants could be found in libraries. At the same time, serfs working in the forests and hunting grounds gained the knowledge which today we call folk medicine.
